The present research is dedicated to the delimitation of water protection zones and riparian buffers for the protection of the river banks and reservoirs built on their course within the boundaries of the Northern Development Region of the Republic of Moldova. The assessment of the spatial distribution of these areas was carried out on the basis of national legislation using geoinformational techniques. The total area of the protection zones was calculated at 2767 km2. Referring to the river type, about 14.7% of the delimited area is estimated for large rivers, 16.2% for medium rivers, 12.6% for small rivers, 52.6% for very small rivers and 3.9% for streams. The area of riparian buffers reaches 306 km2, which represents about 11% of the area of the water protection zones. The land cover within the boundaries of the Prut River’s riparian buffers is characterized by the highest share of forests, 78%. In the case of the Nistru River, these areas are divided between 28% arable land, 20% forest, 17% grassland.
