Abstract

The article examines synonymic interconnection as one of the essential criteria of synonymy, with the application in medical terminology. According to the presented approach, the value of a word derives from its combinatorial potential, and synonymy cannot be defined solely by the ability to mutually substitute two isolated words, but must be understood within the context of typical expressions. Thus, the study investigates how context influences the ability of synonyms to substitute each other, identifying structural types of synonym networks with different levels of asymmetry (major, medium, and null). The main conclusion is that synonymic interconnection and the possibility of substitution depend on the level of asymmetry within the synonymic series, and context plays a decisive role in limiting interchangeability.
