The mineral composition of bentonite clays from the Lărguța deposit and their adsorption properties

Abstract

The article presents the results of a study on the types of light gray and light brown bentonite clay from the Lărguța deposit, located in the southern region of the Republic of Moldova. As a result of applying structural analysis methods using X-ray diffraction, it was determined that the bentonite clay from this deposit is dominated by the calcium form of montmorillonite, with mixtures of illite, kaolinite, mixed-layer formations, feldspar, and calcite. The adsorption characteristics of the studied bentonite clays are presented. It was found that the adsorption activity of the sodium (Na) form of bentonite, in relation to the cationic dye, is several times higher than that of the natural clay. The results obtained demonstrated the potential use of natural calcium bentonites from Moldova for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with dyes, by replacing their natural exchange complex with alkali ions. At the same time, the adsorption activity of the natural bentonite from Lărguța is comparable to that of known clay adsorbents from other regions and countries.
