The Gregorian calendar in the Romanian Principalities and the reform attempt of Al. I. Cuza

This article presents the attempt of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the ruler of the Union of the Romanian Principalities, to reform Romanian society in the second half of the 19th century by forcing the Church to make the transition from the old calendar, also called Julian, to the one established by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, also known as Gregorian. The problem generated by the correction of the calendar was debated in some church circles long before Cuza. The Hieromonk Laurențiu de Horezu (1751), the confessor Radu (1806), the Abbot Benedict of the Neamț Monastery (1843) realized the backwardness of the Julian calendar compared to the corrected Gregorian calendar. However, Cuza and his government were the first to officially attempt to intervene in clarifying the calendar issue.
