Urban green spaces in the Republic of Moldova – theoretical and practical approaches and quantitative and qualitative aspects

The study presents the current state of urban green space in the Republic of Moldova, a vital component of the anthropogenic urban environment, due to their values, functions and benefits. The policy framework in the field was analyzed, especially at the regional and national levels, together with the challenges and opportunities arising in the context of the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European space. The main actions necessary for the national legislative reform were identified, with an emphasis on the protection, conservation and restoration of urban green infrastructure. The methodological framework applied to the quantitative and qualitative assessments of urban green spaces was studied, as a support tool for scientific research at the national level. Through the study, some indicators of urban forest fund in the Republic of Moldova (2000–2024) were calculated, mapped and described, in order to identify the temporal trends of green spaces, their structure according to functionality and land use, as well as the (in)sufficiency of green space at the urban level. For the sustainable management of green spaces, it is recommended to integrate naturebased solutions into urban planning and resilience, along with environmental awareness and education, including the practical application of scientific research.
