Value guidelines in adolescents: a gender-based analysis

Abstract

This research investigates the specificity of value orientations in adolescents, with a gender-differentiated approach, by analyzing the hierarchy of 35 value indicators. The results highlight the existence of clear differences between boys and girls in terms of prioritizing fundamental values. In boys, an emphasis on values related to health and protection is noted, reflected in the top ranking of indicators such as "abstinence from drug use" and "belonging to a stable family", which suggests a major concern for physical and social integrity and professional self-fulfillment. In contrast, adolescent tend to prioritize interpersonal relationships and personal development, with "love" representing the main value, along with increased attention paid to aesthetics and self-knowledge. Girls also show a marked concern for protection and prevention values, highlighted by the rejection of tobacco and alcohol consumption. A comparative analysis with data from previous studies indicates a shift in value positioning, marked by increased awareness of health risks and a decrease in the importance attributed to material well-being. These findings reflect contemporary socio-cultural influences and educational dynamics in the configuration of adolescents' value systems, revealing gender differences as determining factors in the process of forming value identity.
