Assessment of welfare inequality among the population of the Republic of Moldova

Inequality in population welfare represents one of the major socioeconomic challenges facing the Republic of Moldova. The paper analyzes the level and dynamics of welfare inequality during the period 2020-2024, using well-established indicators for assessing the distribution of income and consumption expenditures, such as the Gini coefficient, the quintile share ratio, and the Palma coefficient, calculated by the authors. The results reveal an increasing trend in welfare inequality over the analyzed period, as confirmed by the rising values of the main calculated indicators. The analysis also highlights differences in the evolution of this phenomenon between urban and rural areas. In addition, an international comparative analysis of income inequality and human development is conducted using the Gini coefficient and the inequality-adjusted Human Development Index.
