Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present the methodology for assessing seismic risk at the local level, using the Ungheni district of the Republic of Moldova as a case study. The Vrancea earthquake, with a magnitude of Mw=7.9 and a return period of 475 years, was chosen as the design seismic action. First, a specified earthquake scenario was analyzed using a special macroseismic attenuation equation, which allowed estimating the likely intensity distribution in the study area. Then, based on statistical data and field assessments, the vulnerability of buildings and the seismic risk for the Ungheni city and the neighboring villages were estimated.
