The Bessarabian Question emerged as a significant topic in Western political and diplomatic discourse during the final years of the Crimean War (1855–1856). Western memoir literature from this period reflects the growing interest of the major European powers in limiting Russian influence in Eastern Europe and securing strategic control over the Lower Danube and the Black Sea region. In the memoirs of Greville, Malmesbury and A. Hübner Bessarabia is primarily portrayed as a geopolitical and strategic space rather than as a territory defined by a distinct national identity. The retrocession of Southern Bessarabia to Moldova, established by the Treaty of Paris (1856), is presented as a diplomatic instrument aimed at weakening the Russian Empire and reshaping the regional balance of power.
