Ghenadie Jalbă between tradition, drama, and modernity: the evolution of a complex visual language

Abstract

The entire creative career of the painter Ghenadie Jalbă represents a permanent ascent in terms of broadening his thematic repertoire and deepening the resolution of current issues regarding visual language. The artist's main creative explorations have found a meritorious fulfillment in works where original lyrical, dramatic, and grotesque landmarks – contributing to the constitution of the semantic universe of the images conceived by the protagonist – have served as a starting point in the process of operating with the specific plastic means of easel painting and in defining his own artistic style, which has undergone continuous deepening from one stage to the next. By exploring the art of portraiture, the landscape genre, and thematic painting in an original manner, the painter has established a valuable artistic lineage in the painting of the Republic of Moldova, in which identity traditions, historical events, and the image of the contemporary are called upon to highlight – through an artistic form of certain innovative value – the complex universe of human existence and spirituality from the final decades of the 20th century and the first decades of the new millennium.
