Abstract

The article is dedicated to the solo accordion cycle Expanding Space written between 2021–2022 by the renowned composer Ghenadie Ciobanu and represents a musicological and interpretative study of this creation. The author focuses on the lyrical-philosophical dimension and the original character of the sound of the two pieces of the cycle, due in particular to the exploration of the expressive potential of the accordion. An essential aspect of the analyzed creations is the integration into the compositional writing of the extended techniques specific to the accordion, which Gh. Ciobanu puts at the service of expressiveness: clusters, tremolo, bellow shake, glissando, note bending, percussive procedures, etc. These are not gratuitous artifices, but means of semantic dynamization of the musical discourse. Their expressive impact – from the shock and turmoil of the culminations to the finesse of the lyrical nuances – highlights the potential of the accordion as a versatile instrument in contemporary music, confirming, once again, the fact that Gh. Ciobanu maintains his status as an innovator of his generation, his music offering the performers real technical and artistic challenges, while offering the listener, a deep and captivating aesthetic experience.
