Evolution of paleofaunal assemblages during the late Miocene on the Moldavian Platform

Abstract

The present study analyzes the composition of faunal assemblages from the Late Miocene based on paleontological materials collected from fossil sites attributed to the Stolniceni Formation. The investigated localities are geographically situated in different sectors of the Central Moldavian Plateau: Veverița-2 and Leordoaia in the northern sector (the Bâc–Ichel interfluve), and Suric and Selemet in the southern sector (the Botna-Cogâlnic interfluve). During recent field investigations carried out at these sites, new fossil vertebrate materials were collected, complementing the existing paleontological record. A preliminary assessment indicates that the analyzed faunal assemblages display a high degree of similarity, suggesting their common affiliation with the same biocronological zone, namely MN 13. Nevertheless, the paleofaunal structure reveals subtle but consistent differences that may be interpreted as evidence of a slight chronological differentiation between these assemblages.
