Assessing the normality of grade distributions in a pedagogical experiment: methodological considerations and practical implications

The study falls within the pre-experimental stage of a pedagogical experiment and examines the distribution of grades obtained on the initial test by 167 high school students (9th and 12th grades), organized into four pairs of samples (experimental – EE and control – EC) over two consecutive school years. The test aimed to assess students’ initial level of preparedness prior to the implementation of the educational intervention, as well as to verify the quality of the assessment instrument. To determine whether the test was balanced and whether the data could be analyzed using parametric methods, the normality of the grade distributions was tested using IBM SPSS Statistics software. The testing of the normality of distributions included both graphical methods (histograms, Q-Q plots) and statistical tests (Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk). The results indicate a normal or approximately normal distribution in most samples, supporting the validity of both the applied test and the overall research methodology.
